Do you remember the argument between the atheists in Catch 22 who were arguing over what the God they didn’t believe in was like. One was sure that the God that didn’t exist was a kind and nurturing God and the other held firm in his belief that the one, true, non-existent God was mean and vengeful God. I think they’d fit in well here.
